Egídio (b. 1974, Évora) and Constança Santos (b. 2003, Évora), father and daughter, are heirs to the distant tradition of Alentejo pottery from São Pedro do Corval, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. Belonging to one of the region’s pottery workshops, founded in 1856, they are the third and fourth generations, respectively, of a family deeply connected to the local ceramics’ tradition. However, their work transcends the traditional boundaries, innovating with forms and motifs that challenge the status quo. Their creations are free from the more conventional grammars of tradition and do not conform to the usual parameters of contemporary design. They are, therefore, captivating and strikingly original. The colours, the decorative elements suggesting zoomorphic or fantastical universes, the techniques, and the expressions crafted in an extremely spontaneous manner all evoke comparisons to Picasso or Barceló, yet they belong to a very unique world that we hope will continue to evolve.
